What I'm up to now

5/21/02       WOW... LOTS of stuff going on :) First of all, I'm getting ready to head off to Microsoft-land in less than a week! For anyone who wants to follow my adventures there, you can go to http://www.scottflute.com/Microsoft/ I'll try to update the journal very frequently, and put new pictures up every week :) I even made a nifty web interface to make it super easy to add journal entries. Speaking of pictures, I just bought a brand new digital camera... WAY COOL!! I got a Canon PowerShot S30 and it's absolutely great - I love it! So hopefully, adding new pictures regularly will be a snap :) Last but not least, Rachel got her Teach Baltimore, and just moved into a new apartment - don't forget to check out her pages to see what she's up to :) I probably won't be updating this page until after I get back from the Dark Side, as I'll use the journal I've set up there instead, so don't forget to check it out :)

4/04/02       PICTURES! Finally! :) I scanned/uploaded over 50 new pictures in the following galleries: Enjoy!

4/03/02       Check out this almost-final draft of my number theory paper by clicking here!

4/02/02       Well... it seems that it keeps getting longer and longer in between updates :) But, lot's been going on - first of all, I'm going to be working for Microsoft this summer!! How cool is that?!! I'm going to be a "Software Design Engineer" (ie programmer :P) in the printing and imaging department for Windows. More details on that when I find out more myself :) School is going well, surprisingly, not too busy this semester :) I've almost finished my research paper on Narcissistic Numbers, and have already started a second project now. Sometime soon I'll get that stuff posted up here :) Along with all those pictures I keep promising :)

1/17/02       Yeah yeah yeah, it's been a long time since I've updated anything around here, and I still haven't put any new pictures up :) One of these days... Last semester was pretty crazy, but I actually managed to pull off another 4.0 ... I'm still trying to figure out how I did it though :) I'm still working for APL of course, in fact I just got word from them that they'll have funding to hire me full time for the first have of the summer, and then will let me take a sabbatical of sorts when I take classes in the second half of the summer :) Rachel and I went to Williamsburg VA for new years, and of course there are some (not many though) pics.. I'll probably post them whenever I post the others, right? Hmm... Well, last semester, I liked my Number Theory class so much that I've decided to do my honors research project on it... Between that and work, I've been pretty busy this winter break! Next semester shouldn't be too bad (look at my schedule above - you'll see why :)) What the schedule doesn't show you is that I'll still be working during the semester, and also still working on this research project... Of course, it also doesn't show you that I'm taking one of the classes pass/fail either :) Anyhow, that's all I've been up to... I haven't even had time to work on the Alarm Clock updates that I've promised to everyone who's written me (thank you for all your feedback btw!)

9/25/01       Ok, more of the same :) I've actually got quite a few pictures to put up... finding the time to put them up is another story though!! Things have been crazy lately, what with terrorist attacks and tornados ripping through the University of Md and whatnot... School is going pretty well, not exactly an easy ride this semester, but it seems manageable so far :) I'm working on fixing up some pretty f@$@#-ed up code at APL, the only problem is that they haven't been paying me to do it :( Working on that though. My car died last week; the heater core went bad, and then it overheated, cracking the head... I may end up actually getting a decent car sometime in the not-so-distant future, but we'll see. Sotftware-wise, I finished our first comp sci project a few days early, so I'm toying with the idea of writing an application for the flute society webpage, but we'll see... Anyhow, I'll get those darn pictures up at some point!

9/06/01       I've been very busy lately! School started last week - LOTS of math!! (Just look at my schedule if you don't believe me - 3 out of my 4 classes are math classes) I also went back to work at APL today... I never did get those DVC help files up... oh well :) I bought a new toy over the weekend - a Pocket PC :) Great way to kill time when class gets a bit boring :) Maybe at some point, I'll write some programs for it... For the time being though, it's a lot easier just to download programs that are already out there :) Speaking of which, I wrote a nifty little alarm clock program... I'll try and get it posted up here tonight, but if not, it'll be up sometime :) Check out my software section for more info!

8/14/01       Rachel came back from Interlochen today! Yayyyy :) Of course, she's still in New Jersey but she's a lot closer now :) A week and a half more ;) Bit by bit, I'm working on moving the site, I've added more of the pictures to the new format (and added a few new random pics here and there as well), I haven't even started linking the existing portions to the new format yet, but the new tab is there, with a few galleries in it. Rachel says she has 3 more rolls of film from Interlochen to be developed, so look for a LOT of new pictures to be added in the near future :) As far as work goes, I received the good news the other day that I'll definitely be able to stay at APL in the fall when I go back to school :) Almost better than the paycheck are all the perks - like discounted tickets to just about anything :) Speaking of APL, I'm putting the finishing touches on my program there; Yesterday, today [and tomorrow] I've been writing the help files - approximately 50 html files, quite a bit of javascript, and I don't know how many images. After I finish it up tomorrow, DVC will be about as done as I can get it before it goes out for system testing :) I'll probably put the help files up somewhere on this site at some point, just because I can, and it gives me something to look at and say "I did that!" :) Anyhow, that's about it for now, check back later for more info!

8/02/01       Well, the first of the renovations is under way- I've added the new tab and loaded some galleries! In the upcoming days [translated- weeks :)] I'm going to be moving all of the pictures on this site to the new format. At least for the forseeable future, I will keep all of the original internal links intact (i.e. you can still get to Rachel's pictures by going to her page and then clicking the Pictures! link) however, they will be linked to the new format... Furthermore, all new pictures are going to be added in the new section only. At some point in time, I'll probably do away with the old picture links entirely, so you may as well just get used to going to the pictures tab :) Of course as always, please feel free to contact me and let me know what you think!

7/31/01       Coming Soon!! Look for major changes soon to this site... First of all, I just changed over to a new server... Along with that, I just finished developing a cgi program that will *greatly* simplify the maintenance of all the pictures on this site! I won't give away all the details, but basically, I'm going to add a whole new tab for just pictures, so that they can be consolidated in one area, as opposed to scattered throughout the site as they are now. This is actually a fairly major undertaking, as it's going to involve editing almost every section of the site. But, I think that the end result will be well worth it. (And, I'll probably post the cgi programs in the software area, in case they are of any use to anyone else out there). Otherwise, ummm... I'm still working at APL, plugging away on Data Value Checker (that's the program I'm writing) Probably around 3000 lines of code and counting now. And of course- 25 days ;)

7/17/01       I just added 24 pictures that Rachel took in Interlochen!! Click here to see them!

7/15/01       Well, I've been really busy lately!! That's why I haven't really posted anything new here lately :( I'm doing full-fledged software development at APL now, which is really cool :) The only catch was, I had to learn Visual Basic from scratch... But, it was really easy (at least what I had to do was :)) Aside from that, when I haven't been busy making money, I've usually been pretty busy spending it, generally on Rachel... But anyhow, that's really all the excitement that's going on in my life- work, work, work, then spend, spend, spend (of course, I think both of them are fun :))

6/30/01       Pictures!! Check them out... I've just added 15 new pictures to the site - I've got some new ones of Lucy, of Nikki, of a trip I took to Harpers Ferry, and of course a new pic of Rachel :) I really do promise that I'll write some documentation for C++ Translator and get it posted soon... really! :)

6/25/01       New news! Look out world, I just got a camera!! Not a fancy digital one, but a pretty fancy 35-millimeter one :) I've had it for a whole 3 days, and have already gone through 2 rolls of film :) That should do wonders for the pictures sections of this site :) Also, I've changed job titles at APL - now I'm working on a fairly decent sized software project :) What'll make it challenging is that I'm supposed to write the whole program in Visual Basic... in which I have *no* previous experience... :) I suppose there's a reason why they call it Basic though :) I have finished up the documentation on Link Table, and I've finished coding C++ Translator, so I just need to get motivated to write the documentation for that too... :) Anyhow, I suppose that's about all the news :) Check back soon for pictures! :)

6/16/01       Not too much going on lately... work, and umm, more work :) That's not totally true of course, but with Rachel all the way up in Michigan, I can't get too rowdy ;) I'm still working at APL of course, although I'm about to begin doing some software development in addition to testing... Hmm, major planning is underway for the 3-D Logo, so far everything is looking good there... (of course, I haven't written the first line of code for it yet!) One of these days I'll finish off C++ Translator too :) (Check on my What am I up to now page in my software section for more info...) Maybe this weekend I'll find the time... For anyone who's interested, I made a 1 second avi movie for my brother, and I've posted it on the Pictures of My Life page if you want to download it and see. Otherwise, I guess that's about it! 'Til next time...

6/02/01       OK! Lots of news now :) Rachel left for Interlochen this morning... She also got her hair cut short, and of course, I have pics! I also added some new pictures of Lucy and Nikki too :) I also, *finally* created my "Links listed elsewhere on this page" page- I wrote a program that scanned the 50+ html pages in this site and made a table containing all of the external links on a template page. Also, I found a really great installation program that I like, so look for my new program to be posted in the software section soon! (I just need to write up the documentation for it...) I'm also still finishing off the enhancements to my C++ Translator, I'll probably have version 2 of that posted within another week or so. After that, I plan on beginning work on my 3-D Logo program, so I'll still be quite busy!

5/30/01       Wow, another long spell with no updates; I've been busy... Finals went *extremely* well, I ended up with another 4.0 this semester :) And, I've gotten situated in my new job at APL. Basically what I do is recieve a software system that needs to be tested and get it installed on my computer, then I learn what it's supposed to do, how it works, etc... then I attempt to crash it :) After that, I write up a *really* long plan on how to test it to verify that it actually does what it's supposed to and meets all the requirements that are stated in another really long document (I've already finished one test plan, and it 60 pages long... and that's for a really simple, one-program system...) But, it's fun, and it's close to home so it's all good :) I haven't been doing a whole lot of other things because I've been getting settled in there and adjusting to the summer mode, but I do hope to be productive outside of work again soon :) I've been working on improvements and modifications to the C++ Translator, and hopefully I'll have that out in another week or so... I'm also thinking about a 3-D logo program, among other things... I have some new pictures that I'll post up here in another day or so, among other things, Rachel got her hair cut short, so check back for them!

5/09/01       Great news!! I finally got my summer work situation squared away... I'm going to be interning at Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab. I'm going to be updating test plans and procedures for the Trident II System (don't ask, 'cause I don't really know yet either!). Rachel is going to be away in Michigan all summer because she's going to be working at Interlochen Arts Camp. The good news is that she got a good job :) The bad news is that I'm going to miss her :( Otherwise, I'm just winding down the school year here. One more computer science project left, gotta make up a dance for my dance class, and a couple of finals to take! Anyhow, that's about all the news for now, I'll put up more info about my job after I get started into it!

5/02/01       Wow, I guess I haven't updated much here in a while... I've been pretty busy with school and other stuff... The Flute Society of Washington page was completely lost, but fortunately we were able to find a backup copy! I've added some new pictures of me and Rachel, and I'm thinking of adding a new section to the site... keep checking back for more details!

4/19/01       OK! Both the email and the guestbook are now functional! Please make use of them!!

4/17/01       Well, I'm procrastinating on starting project 5 for CMSC 114... I *think* I finally got my site to work with Netscape browsers, which is very good! I also added a picture of Rachel and I on our anniversary, I'll add more when she gets her film developed... I also added a form so that you can email me, but it's not quite working yet. I oughta have it fixed within a day or so, since I now know what the problem with it is, and then I'll also add a guestbook too. From there, it won't be much longer before this humongous site is finally finished!! Well, I s'pose I oughta start on that $%@! project... (it wouldn't be so bad if the description didn't conflict itself- they say you don't modify function X, and then in the next sentence they tell you what function X's new output has to be...)

4/15/01       Happy Easter everyone! I finally have C++ Translator v1.0 posted!! Click here to check it out! Also, check out the new pictures of Lucy and Niki :)

4/10/01       My birthday has come and gone... it was lots of fun :) The Sonny Rollins concert was great, and I think Rachel may have even enjoyed herself slightly (although I'm sure she will firmly deny it!!). My parents got me a Sega Dreamcast... Yeah, I know they've stopped making them, but I love Crazy Taxi :) I've also gotten a couple other games for it too- AeroWings, Tomb Raider, Sonic Adventure, and Rogue Spear. I still haven't decided yet whether having this thing in my room is such a good idea or not... it's quite a distraction!! Keep checking for C++ Translator to be posted... I *will* have a first version posted here very soon! I'm a bit under the weather right now, so I should have some extra time to work on it since I'm not going to school...

3/29/01       Ok, Spring break is long gone now :) Rachel and I had fun together... as soon as we get the pictures developed, I'll be sure to scan them with my spiffy new scanner and post them up :) So, yeah, I got a new scanner... at least I'm waiting for it to be shipped to me (Supposed to arrive April 2) Just got project 4 for cmsc114, doesn't look to be too bad... I'm also making speedy progress with my C++ translator program- look for that to be posted here very soon!! I haven't decided yet whether I'm going to scrap GigTracker and move on to my FFT program or try and salvage it... Every program I write, I learn more about MFC and realize how absolutely backwards I did everything earlier... Of course, next weekend is our big trip- we're going to Rachel's house for passover, and of course to New York to see Sonny Rollins for my birthday :):):) Oh, and lest I forget- for the first time in four years, I actually went and got advised in time for early registration!! Check back after April 3 to see my schedule for next fall!!

3/12/01       Rachel and I semi-finalized our spring break plans- I'm going to be going back to her house in New Jersey for the first several days :) It's midterm carnival at school- gotta love it! Calculus exam last Friday, Comp Sci exam today, English exam Friday, fun fun fun! Rachel has it worse than I do- she has a music history exam this week... I'm glad I'm done with all those :P Still haven't figured out why Netscape doesn't like my javascript yet... I hope it's not because it's imbedded, but I don't think that's a problem... Oh yeah- working on Project 3 for computer sciece- dynamic memory allocation... oooooooooh! Anyhow, That's about it... Next update will probably be after I get back from New Jersey :)

3/04/01       I got my hair cut!! It's amazing! Not just a little trim, I went from having a ponytail lower than my shoulders to having 1/2" of hair at the longest spots :) In other news, Rachel and I are gearing up for our 1 year anniversary on March 16 (same day as my English 210 midterm- Bleh!!) :) We're going out to dinner at a mystery location in Georgetown, and who knows what else- it just happens to occur on the last day before spring break for both of us :) Speaking of which, classes are going fine... Most recently finishing up my second project for CMSC114, and that's about it... Check back for more!!
